Richard West aka Mr.C was born in London in the late 60s. He started MCing in London clubs aged 16 and soon earned a reputation as a fast-talking, vivacious rapper working with LWR radio’s Ron Tom, Jasper the Vinyl Junkie, and Jazzy M. In 1986, Mr.C linked up with Colin Faver & Evil Eddie Richards to become the resident rapper at the legendary Camden Palace in London, later MCing for Colin Faver on the then-illegal pirate radio station Kiss FM.
In August 1987, Mr.C recorded his first deep house track Page 67 with Eddie Richards as Myster-E, inspiring him to become a DJ. By September that year, he had quit his milkman job and taken to the decks. Since then, he has organized, promoted, and been resident DJ at parties including Fantasy (1988), Base (1989), Release (1991), Harmony (1992), Drop (1993), Cyclone (1994), Vapourspace (1994–95), Flavour (The End 1995–96), Subterrain (The End 1995–2002), Superfreq (2002–present), Super Disco Freq (LA 2010–present), and Souled Out (2021–present).
He was also a resident DJ & street promoter at the legendary RIP parties at Clink Street, London Bridge, throughout 1988—widely credited as the birthplace of rave culture. After stints on pirate stations LWR, Fantasy FM, and Dance FM, Mr.C hosted the weekly show Future Music on Kiss 100FM from 1993–2002. He also presented TV shows for MTV, VIVA, and the BBC, becoming one of the world’s most iconoclastic DJs.
In December 1995, Mr.C opened The End nightclub in London with partner Layo Paskin. For 13 years, The End was regarded as one of the world’s best nightclubs, setting the blueprint for modern clubbing, before closing in January 2009.
As a recording artist, Mr.C has used many aliases (Myster-E, Unity 2, Nu Jacks, Bass Bureau, The Shamen, Mantrac, Somnambulist, Animus Amour, Killer Loop, Sycophant Slags, Indigo Kidz, East LA Tek, Wonkytonk, The Cheek). He is best known as the frontman, songwriter, and producer of The Shamen, scoring multiple UK Top 10 hits, including Move Any Mountain, Love Sex Intelligence, Boss Drum, Phorever People, and the UK #1 Ebeneezer Goode. Their album Boss Drum went double platinum, and Mr.C won an Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year (1992/93).
Mr.C is co-founder of Plink Plonk Records, co-owner of End Recordings, and founder of Superfreq Records, now releasing music prolifically. Recent work includes collaborations as Indigo Kidz (with Affie Yusuf), East LA Tek (with Noel Jackson), Wonkytonk (with Radio Rental), and The Cheek (with Modulon).
Superfreq—Mr.C’s flagship party and label—celebrated its 22nd anniversary in March 2024. In London, Superfreq now runs pop-up warehouse parties, Fabric takeovers, and day events at Aures London and LDN East, plus international events across North & South America, Asia, and annual residencies in Koh Phangan, Thailand. Superfreq also had seven successful Ibiza seasons in the 2000s and hosted annual showcases at BPM Festival in Mexico.
Recent releases include Radical Inclusion remixes (2019/20), Celebration of Life (2020), a series of EPs with Noel Jackson as East LA Tek, and remixes for Nepotek, Sam Money, J Gabriel & Chuffing Buffy, and Terry Francis. His project Wonkytonk (with Radio Rental) has a new release lined up for Spring 2025.
